Description:
Medium-sized finch with conical bill, bright yellow wingbars and notched tail. Male has blackish-olive upperparts, yellow supercilium and crescent behind ear-coverts, yellow underparts and rump, and broad yellow panels across wing. Female has paler olive upperparts with faint dark streaking, less distinct head pattern.
Distribution:
Common summer visitor mostly limited to southern parts of Astore and Diamer districts. Prefers submontane and montane open, mixed deciduous and conifer forests, grassy slopes and open or terraced hillsides and cultivation, not above 3300m.
Behavior:
Forages in vegetation, clinging to stems and seed heads of tall plants; also perches in bushes and tall trees, including at tops of pines and alders. Eats variety of seeds, including pine and alder, also downy seed heads and other herbs, ripening seed heads of sunflowers and buckwheat, also berries; may also take some small insects.
